When hiking in the Alps in summer, it’s not unusual to see your fair share of paragliders, sometimes the odd one near a peak in the distance, sometimes a flurry in the sky so close you can see the smiles on their faces. Not too long ago I was in the Appenzell region of Switzerland heading for a ridge line, and I realised I had stumbled into the middle of a huge Paragliding competition. I had seen nothing like it. The way the participants were framed against the sky, the sheer number them swirling above, floating through clouds and forming murmurations.
