Colour is always my preference; muted - usually, subdued - often, but whether shooting portraits or commercials or landscapes or gigs, I find myself leaning towards to colour and looking for ways to accentuate and use colour to define and shape an image. Occasionally however, the stark contrast of blacks and whites and the shades of grey in between are the perfect way to bring a viewer into an image, to demonstrate scale, to point up the light and texture of the landscape that was on show when I was at work. I’ve been shooting in the Lake District for many years now, and whilst I always lean towards ways of bringing out and using the colours on offer, once in a while a shot just cries out to be processed in black and white.
